PTR #46 - Black Friday offer: should you or shouldn't you?
Plus, another nice landmine variation & how to get more views on your stories.
The PT Roadmap
A weekly newsletter for personal trainers to guide you to become a better coach and build a better business.
Hey!
Thanks for opening up today's newsletter. I appreciate you being here.
I’ve been binge-watching Mr Beast videos over the past week. This one on $1 vs $1,000,000 hotel rooms was good. The $10,000 one with the underwater bedroom was my favourite. His journey as a creator is also fascinating. He posted 100s of videos on YouTube before he made a penny. Nice lesson in there on the importance of consistency with content creation.
In today’s issue:
✅ Business topic
✅ Recommended exercise
✅ Social post worth your time
Let's get into it!
Business
Black Friday Offer: Should You or Shouldn’t You?
My answer to this question is simple:
If you want clients just now, run a BF offer. If you don’t want clients, don’t run one.
It is this simple because this is a time of year when people are more willing to spend money.
You might think it’s just consumer goods, but it’s not.
I’ve purchased courses, coaching calls and magazine subscriptions on previous Black Friday’s.
There’s no reason why we can’t take advantage of people’s increased willingness to dip into their pockets.
Ok, so what should I run?
I’d recommend running a giveaway or competition-type offer.
I don’t hate discounts. I know some mentors do, but I’m not one of them because people are price-motivated.
But I do think they are best saved for elsewhere in the year.
Most companies will be running discounts for their BF offers.
So, do something different.
How to run a Black Friday giveaway
Run it like any other giveaway.
Pick a prize
Pick a length
Tell people how to enter
Market the shit out of it
Pick a winner
Offer everyone who entered a prize for entering
Here’s an example of one I used with a coaching client earlier this year. This wasn’t for Black Friday, but it still worked well.
Prize = 4-weeks of free twice-a-week PT
Length = 7 days
How to enter = like his announcement post, comment “I’m in”, and enter your email address at the link in his bio.
Marketing = one announcement post, one email announcement to his email list, three posts with a caption or call-to-action reminding people to enter, and daily stories about the competition.
Pick his winner using a random number generator.
Offer everyone who entered £50 off his 30-day PT trial.
He ended up with four new clients off the back of this. One who stuck around after the free month and three who signed up for the discounted 30-day trial rate.
Not bad for something that doesn’t take that much work and costs nothing.

Exercise
This Week’s Exercise: Landmine Single-Arm Supported Row
Sticking with another landmine variation I’ve enjoyed playing with since buying this new attachment (which I’m now happy to say I would 100% recommend)
The landmine handle attachment has made gripping for rows and SLRDLs much easier, and it just feels nicer to hold something you can wrap your whole hand around.
This rowing exercise is a nice variation that you can easily load up.
I’ve added in the step for support as I was finding doing it without a lot of work for my erectors.
Give it a shot!
Social Post
I had no idea stories were the most used feature on Instagram until I read this post from Simon at Strong Media.
I’ve found stories to be a massive source of business for me since leaving Lift the Bar.
Every single sign-up has come from either this newsletter or my stories. Not one has enquired and cited my posts as the thing that pushed them over the line.
This doesn’t discount the need for helpful content, far from it.
But it does make me think the ask might be best saved for your stories.
Here are a few things I’ve found helpful for story views & interaction:
I no longer reshare my posts, and I rarely share tags.
I often delete yesterday’s stories if views are poor (<200 with 650 followers for me)
I share personal bits and pieces, videos from my training, books I’m reading, client screenshots, things I’m working on, stupid things from my life and the occasional call to action.
Polls always do well, too. Think about questions you could ask your audience. They can be random (favourite dessert) or niche-specific (what’s a gym exercise you love to hate)
Thanks so much for reading.
Until next Friday, Stuart.
